Tasting Notes and Scores

93 WS

Has beautiful aromas of mineral, flint, lemon and sliced red apple. Full-bodied, with lovely fruit and clean, ripe acidity. Shows hints of cream and vanilla, with a rich, balanced finish. James Suckling

Wine Spectator

Although this spectacular 2004 tips the scales at an astonishing 14.5% alcohol, it is an elegant white Bordeaux offering notes of honeyed grapefruit, melons, orange rinds, and lemon oil. Medium-bodied, rich, beautifully textured, and pure, it should evolve for 15-20 years.

(100% sauvignon blanc, 14.5% alcohol) Extremely fresh, deep nose combines quinine, ginger, minerals and citrus fruits, with white peach and honey notes that suggest viognier (I could not possibly have guessed that this wine was entirely from sauvignon blanc). Rich, honeyed and powerful, with superb fat and depth of flavor. Notes of peach, citrus fruit, hay and honeydew melon. Pontallier says this may be Margaux's best Pavillon Blanc ever, and I certainly can't recall a more promising vintage.

Tasted at Bordeaux Index Chateau Margaux dinner at The Square. A silvery hue. This Pavillon Blanc has a lovely, creamy oaky nose that will be subsumed with time. A touch of smoke, cashew nut, linseed and green lemon. Great definition. The palate is well-defined with a citrus backbone, hints of lime, custard creams and a touch of roasted almond towards the finish. Very fine.

Youthful Sauvignon aromas dominate the nose at first (hardly surprising since this is 100% Sauvignon) but this is followed by an amazing combination of sweetness and weight which follows the initial green impact and a lovely satin texture. This wine manages to be amazingly refreshing considering its natural alcoholic strength of 14.2%. Very long, this positively vibrates o the palate. Paul Pontallier feels this is the best vintage yet – and certainly with the vines replanted by the Mentzelopoulos regime at the end of the 1970s, vine age must really be playing a part. (JR)
