Tasting Notes and Scores

97 AG

A last minute addition, Rousseau's 2002 Clos St. Jacques nearly stole the show (actually it did!), proving why it is revered among Burgundy lovers. Arguably one of the youngest and most vibrant wines of the evening, the Clos St. Jacques impressed for its intense fruit and phenomenal balance. It was the perfect ending to a fabulous night of food, wine and conversation.

The 2002 Gevrey-Chambertin Clos Saint-Jacques 1er Cru is just a tiny bit smudged on the nose, but it rectifies that with aeration, offering disarming brambly red fruit, bergamot and potpourri scents, just a slight ferrous tincture in the background. The palate is fine-boned with pure red fruit, structured and slightly disjointed initially. Yet it coheres magnificently in the glass, so smooth. I was shocked when the vintage was revealed because this bottle suggests a very slow evolution. Wonderful. Tasted blind at the Wallace brothers' Xmas dinner.

(like the Chambertin and Clos de Beze, this is aged in 100% new oak) Bright, deep, saturated red. Sexy aromas of red cherry, raspberry, minerals and sweet oak, all lifted by a floral perfume. Wonderfully suave and tangy; offers an uncanny combination of layered texture and precision of flavor, and intensity without excess weight. Highly perfumed in the mouth. You can't make this stuff outside Burgundy Very long and fine on the aftertaste.

An expressive and still almost entirely primary nose of superbly complex, ripe and elegant earthy red and black fruit aromas is followed by round, dense and mineral-driven medium-bodied flavors that display excellent intensity from the mid-palate all the way to the lengthy and sappy backend. This is very sappy and completely coats and stains the palate with dusty tannins and a finish that lasts and lasts. Just as the cask sample was, this remains a very impressive effort that is still 3 to 6 years away from its peak though it could certainly be enjoyed now if desired. Drink: Try from 2014+

Copious quantities of spicy black cherries explode from the glass of the 2002 Gevrey-Chambertin Clos St.-Jacques. Medium-bodied, complex, and deep, this is a truly delicious wine. Its satin-textured personality coats the taster’s palate with boisterous dark cherry, cinnamon, spicy oak, and blackberry flavors that linger in its extensive finish. Anticipated maturity: 2007-2017.
