Tasting Notes and Scores

99 JC

I feel like the consistency and quality of Torbreck's flagship wine has only increased over time. The 2012 RunRig is gorgeously floral and vibrant, with concentrated red berries, characteristic weight and intensity on the palate and supple, silky tannins. It's delicious now, but it should age gracefully through at least 2035.

Apparently blended, not co-fermented, with viognier. The bouquet is rich and expressive, with blackberry, satsuma plum and licorice to the fore, and continues on to the fore-palate. Like The Laird, to be judged for what it is, but here the alcohol burns too strongly on the finish and aftertaste. Drink by 2042.

Heady and perfumed with dark and chard fruit notes. Jammy with lashings of butterscotch oak, warming spice, wood and warm ash from the fireplace. Fresh, but drying oak on the finish.

More lift on the nose than the Descendant. Rich – very rich, very sweet – with a hint of sherbet. Perhaps not for sustained drinking, but with masses of impact. Not my personal style of wine but it's well made. Slightly cocoa-esque. And it finishes a bit suddenly. (JR)
